Summer Blockbusters That Weren’t

Welcome to Not Another Film Reviewer, yet another site where someone reviews movies and acts like he knows what he’s talking about. I’m Ricky, and I review movies, and possibly other things.

We are in the middle of what would usually be Summer Blockbuster season, but with theaters still closed for the time being and a lot of us stuck at home, for the next 12 weeks I’m going to be reviewing 12 Summer blockbusters from years past. However, I will not be looking at the incredibly iconic films that have come to define the cinema experience. Enough has been said about Jaws, Star Wars, and Independence Day, and there’s really nothing I can add. Instead, I will be looking at the box-office bombs, the critical failures, and the more forgotten films that quickly left theaters to make way for more successful attempts.

To qualify, the film must have been released to theaters during the Summer movie season, which traditionally begins Memorial Day weekend, and ends in mid-August. Sorry Fast & Furious movies released in April, you’re out. The movie must have some sort of bad reputation, even if it was a box-office hit, so Michael Bay is fair game. The goal of this is to look at the stillborn franchises and the wannabe crowd-pleasers and see if I can figure out why people chose not to embrace them. Were audiences right to stay away, or did they miss something? I start with a real highlight, “The Last Airbender.”
