Summer Blockbusters That Weren't
In my first series, looked at box-office bombs, the critical failures, and the more forgotten films that quickly left theaters to make way for more successful attempts.
It seems critics didn’t appreciate the random, see-what-sticks style on display here. If they had, they may have understood what this film truly is: a 97-minute peek into the mind of “Weird” Al himself.
In essence, Free State of Jones is about a rebellion within a rebellion, about a man who got tired of suffering for other people protecting themselves and saw slavery for what it truly is. It’s an ambitious film, but lacks focus. I like this movie, and it doesn’t really work.
Lifeforce may have been made with the mainstream Summer movie season in mind, but it does not feel like it. Despite the budget, this is very much a B-movie, with all the silliness, violence, acting, effects, cheese and exploitation that term implies.
